Bear Aware

dWe had our first visit from a bear this week so it's time to review our bear safety! She came one morning, but quickly ran off to the woods once she heard all the school commotion :) As you know Brackendale is located in prime bear habitat and it is not usual for sightings to occur at this time of year.

For coming and going to school, please ensure an adult is present or that they're travelling in groups.

The BC Conservation Officer Service 24-hour hotline at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).

You can receive wildlife alerts by email Sign up for wildlife alerts or follow the District of Squamish on FaceBook.

The District of Squamish reminds residents of the following safety precautions when outdoors:

  • Make noise by using your voice i.e. talk, sing, or give a shout out when approaching a blind corner, near rivers, or near natural bear food.
  • Riding or running quickly and quietly puts you at a higher risk for surprise encounters. Slow down going around blind corners and make noise.
  • Look for signs of recent bear activity i.e. claw marks on trees, fresh scat, day beds, ripped apart logs or overturned boulders.
  • Hike in groups.
  • Be extra aware during the early morning and early evening hours.
  • Leash dogs. Keep dogs on trails.
  • Pack out what you pack in.

You can also help to ensure that wildlife moves through our neighborhood without being attracted to food sources by:

  • Keep both locks on garbage, recycling & organic totes at all times.
  • Place totes curbside between onlyon collection day and never the night before
  • Freeze smelly food waste in a paper bag and dispose on collection day.
  • Rinse out all recycling
  • Ensure chicken coops & beehives are surrounded by a well maintained electric fence.
  • Ensure bird seeds are not accumulating on the ground underneath the feeder by using a catch tray.
  • Pick fruit as it ripens.
  • Maintain an odourless compost - Consider an indoor worm composter.
  • Feed pets indoors and keep all bowls indoors.
  • Keep barbecues clean and grease free
  • Move fridges and freezers indoors or lock them.

Also know that we have a Wildlife sighting protocol at our school and will bring students indoors as needed.  Thank you for your attention to safety of our children and all community members.

Walk Your Wheels

d

With good weather we are loving scootering and biking to school again! Please remind your kids to walk their wheels once on school property.

f

Also scooters need to be secured to the bike rack or fence outsideThey pose a tripping hazard when stored in classrooms and hallways

Please remind kids to keep scooters outside and bring those locks to secure to the racks!

Brackendale PAC Needs YOU!!!

dThe PAC executive committee is volunteer-run, as are all of the PAC organized events. The committee fundraises to bring extra-curricular activities, sports, events, new equipment, hot lunch programs, and much more to our school, which would otherwise not happen. Some of the current PAC executives have been in their roles for the last 4-5 years, and some are ready to pass the torch or have kids who are leaving the school at the end of this year or next. We are therefore seeking new executive members for the 24/25 school year.
